Over 14,500 Units Sold: The Phenomenal Rise of Chinese Excavator Export to Indonesia

In 2024, Chinese excavator export to Indonesia reached record highs, marking one of the brightest performances in China’s construction machinery trade.

According to customs statistics, in the first three quarters of 2025, China exported 14,667 excavators to Indonesia, including 14,530 crawler excavators – a year-on-year increase of 51.9%. The total export value soared to RMB 5.19 billion (approximately USD 720 million), up 32% compared with the same period last year. Indonesia has overtaken other countries to become China’s No.1 export destination for excavators by value, representing over 10% of total exports in 2024.

Strong Market Demand Driven by Resources and Infrastructure

Behind this boom lies Indonesia’s fast-growing demand for construction machinery. The country boasts rich mineral resources, including nickel, tin, copper, coal, and bauxite – whose reserves rank among the largest in the world. In recent years, the Indonesian government has significantly increased investment in mining, improved the business environment, and attracted foreign participation, all of which have created robust demand for excavators and other heavy equipment.

At the same time, Indonesia is undergoing a massive infrastructure expansion. The Indonesian government has launched over 50 major infrastructure projects between 2023 and 2024, including new highways, rail corridors, and energy facilities. These projects have driven unprecedented demand for mid- and large-scale excavators, creating new opportunities for Chinese manufacturers.

Deepening Roots: Chinese Brands Make Inroads in Indonesia

Leading Chinese construction equipment manufacturers have strategically prioritized and heavily invested in the Indonesian market:

Chinese Excavator Export to Indonesia

SANY Group: Since 2008, SANY has leveraged Indonesia as its gateway to the Southeast Asian market. On September 26 this year, SANY Group signed a strategic cooperation agreement worth approximately RMB 1.45 billion with Indonesian financial institutions.

This partnership will strongly support SANY’s business expansion, customer financing, and key projects in Indonesia, demonstrating the high confidence of Indonesian financial institutions in the SANY brand and its future growth.

Caterpillar: American brands like Caterpillar also hold a strong market presence in Indonesia.
Through its dealer Trakindo, Caterpillar has a long-standing partnership with PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) and supplies heavy equipment, including excavators, to PTFI and other coal mining operators in Kalimantan.

XCMG: With a quarter-century presence in Indonesia, XCMG officially opened its Indonesia Company in 2017. Their export growth rate has consistently surged past 100% annually, a remarkable performance supported by a comprehensive, localized service system that offers “equipment plus solution” full-cycle support.

LiuGong: Demonstrating long-term confidence, LiuGong plans a RMB 500 million investment to construct a high-standard manufacturing plant in Indonesia, anticipated to commence operations by 2026.

Challenges and Key Market Factors

Despite the optimistic outlook, several challenges remain.

First, Indonesia’s local distribution and maintenance networks are still underdeveloped in remote islands, which increases operational costs for heavy equipment users.
Second, the pace of major infrastructure investment can fluctuate due to fiscal constraints and project approval delays.

Finally, the industry is entering a technological transition period: Indonesia’s new green industry policies require a gradual shift toward lower-emission and intelligent equipment by 2025, pushing suppliers to accelerate innovation.

These challenges, however, are also creating opportunities. The need for machine replacement—nearly 40% of Indonesia’s construction machinery fleet has been in service for more than a decade—will drive demand for new, more efficient excavators. Electrification, telematics, and smart operation systems are expected to become the next major growth areas, providing long-term momentum for Chinese excavator export to Indonesia.

Outlook

As Indonesia continues its large-scale infrastructure push and green transformation, the country’s demand for excavators will remain strong. The confluence of infrastructure development, essential equipment replacement, and the green industry push creates an immense market space for Chinese heavy machinery. Nearly 40% of existing machines have been in use for more than 10 years. The ongoing equipment renewal cycle will further accelerate replacement needs. With technological innovation, localized operations, and strong bilateral relations as solid foundations, Chinese excavator export to Indonesia is expected to maintain robust momentum and contribute to a new chapter of win-win cooperation between the two nations.
